How to get rid of Dental Pain

6th May 2026

Dental pain is one of those things that’s almost impossible to ignore. Whether it’s a dull, nagging ache or a sharp, stabbing sensation, tooth pain has a way of taking over your day — and often your night too. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most effective ways to manage dental pain at home, explain what different types of pain might mean, and help you understand when it’s time to stop managing and start treating. At City Dental Clinic, we see patients in pain every day, and we’re always here to help you get to the root of the problem.

Why Does Dental Pain Happen?

Dental pain is almost always a signal that something needs attention. The most common causes include tooth decay that has reached the inner layers of the tooth, a cracked or fractured tooth, gum disease, an abscess or infection, a failing filling or crown, or teeth grinding (bruxism). In some cases, pain can also radiate from one tooth to another, or even into the jaw and ear, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from. Understanding the likely cause can help you manage the pain more effectively in the short term — but it’s important to remember that home remedies treat the symptom, not the problem. Only a dentist can treat the underlying cause.

Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

The most reliable way to manage dental pain at home is with over-the-counter medication. Ibuprofen is generally the most effective option for dental pain because it tackles both the pain and the inflammation that often accompanies it. Paracetamol is a good alternative for those who cannot take ibuprofen, and the two can be safely alternated by most adults to maintain more consistent pain control — for example, taking ibuprofen, then paracetamol two hours later, and so on. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packet and never exceed the recommended amount. If pain is severe enough that standard doses aren’t touching it, that’s a strong sign you need to see a dentist rather than take more medication.

Salt Water Rinses

A warm salt water rinse is one of the simplest and most effective home remedies for dental pain, particularly when there is inflammation or infection involved. Dissolve half a teaspoon of table salt in a glass of warm water and rinse gently around the affected area for 30 to 60 seconds before spitting out. Salt water helps to reduce bacterial load in the mouth, draw out fluid from swollen tissues, and keep the painful area clean. It won’t cure the underlying problem, but it can provide meaningful relief and is safe to use as often as needed throughout the day.

Cold Compress

If your dental pain is accompanied by swelling — whether inside the mouth or visible on the outside of the face — a cold compress can help to reduce inflammation and numb the area. Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek for up to 20 minutes at a time, with a break of at least 20 minutes in between. Never apply ice directly to the skin. A cold compress is particularly useful in the first 24 to 48 hours after a dental injury or when a wisdom tooth is causing swelling at the back of the jaw.

Avoiding Triggers

While you’re waiting to see a dentist, being mindful of what aggravates your pain can make a significant difference to your comfort. Very hot or very cold food and drink are common triggers for tooth sensitivity and can dramatically worsen pain if the nerve of a tooth is exposed or irritated. Sweet foods and drinks can also aggravate decay-related pain. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth to the painful tooth, and if possible, stick to soft, lukewarm foods until you’ve been seen. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can also reduce the blood pressure around the tooth that tends to make pain feel worse at night.

When Home Remedies Aren’t Enough

Home remedies can take the edge off dental pain, but they are not a substitute for treatment. You should contact a dentist promptly if your pain is severe or getting worse rather than better, if you have swelling of the face or jaw, if you have a fever or feel generally unwell, if you notice a bad taste in your mouth or pus around a tooth, or if the pain has persisted for more than a day or two without improving. These are signs that an infection or serious underlying problem may be developing, and waiting it out is unlikely to help.

At City Dental Clinic, we do our very best to see patients in pain on the same day. If you’re struggling, please don’t wait — get in touch and we’ll find a way to see you as quickly as possible.

What Will the Dentist Do?

The treatment for dental pain depends entirely on the cause. For decay that has reached the nerve, a root canal treatment may be needed to remove the infected tissue and save the tooth. For a dental abscess, treatment usually involves draining the infection, antibiotics, and addressing the source — whether that’s a root canal or an extraction. A cracked tooth may need a crown to hold it together and protect the nerve. For pain caused by gum disease, a professional clean and ongoing hygiene treatment can make a dramatic difference. In many cases, patients are surprised by how straightforward the treatment is once they finally come in.

Don’t Put It Off

The single most important thing you can do for dental pain is to have it assessed by a dentist. Pain that is ignored rarely goes away on its own — and in many cases, the longer it is left, the more complex and costly the treatment becomes. What might be a straightforward filling today could become a root canal or extraction in a few months’ time. At City Dental Clinic, near Moorgate, Barbican, and Old Street, we offer flexible appointments and a friendly, no-judgment approach for patients who haven’t been in a while. We’re here to help, not to lecture.

You can book online at any time, or call us on 020 7638 0870 and our team will do their best to get you seen quickly.
