What’s Included in Your Dental Examination?

Our dental examination goes far beyond a quick look at your teeth. We use a thorough 10-point assessment to give both new and existing patients a detailed, honest review of their oral health. Here’s exactly what we check during your appointment:

  1. Plaque & Tartar Assessment — We examine your mouth to identify where plaque and tartar are building up, helping us advise on your daily brushing and flossing routine before problems develop.
  2. HD Video Camera Review — We use an HD intra-oral camera to film and photograph your teeth and gums, so you can see exactly what we see. This helps you understand your dental health in a clear, visual way.
  3. Microscopic Magnification — Our microscopic magnification tools give us a highly detailed view of your teeth, any existing fillings, crowns or dental work — identifying issues invisible to the naked eye.
  4. Oral Cancer Screening — Every examination includes a standard oral cancer screening. This straightforward check takes just a few minutes and gives important peace of mind.
  5. General Dental Health Review — We discuss your overall health as part of the examination, since conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can have a direct impact on your oral health.
  6. Jaw & Bite Analysis — We assess your jaw alignment and bite, checking for signs of teeth grinding, jaw pain or bite problems that can lead to worn teeth, fractured enamel and headaches over time.
  7. Digital X-Rays — We use state-of-the-art digital X-rays to examine the internal structure of your teeth and the surrounding bone. These instant, low-radiation images help us detect decay, bone loss and other conditions that aren’t visible during a visual examination.
  8. Oral Hygiene Score — At the end of the examination, we give you a personalised oral hygiene score — an honest assessment of how well you’re maintaining your teeth and gums — along with practical, tailored advice on how to improve.
  9. Cosmetic Analysis — If you’re interested in improving the appearance of your smile, we’ll walk you through the cosmetic treatment options available, from teeth whitening to Invisalign, and discuss what might suit you.
  10. Comprehensive Treatment Review — We summarise everything we’ve found, explain any conditions or concerns, and discuss all available treatment options — with no pressure. You leave with a clear understanding of your dental health and any recommended next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Examinations

How long does a dental examination take?

A new patient dental examination at City Dental Clinic typically takes around 30 minutes. This allows us enough time to carry out the full 10-point assessment, take digital X-rays if needed, and talk you through everything we find. Follow-up examinations for existing patients are usually also around 30 minutes, as we will check the same key metrics every time we see you, not just the first time.

How often should I have a dental check-up?

Most adults should have a dental examination every six to twelve months, though the right frequency depends on your individual oral health. If you have a higher risk of dental problems — for example due to gum disease, a history of cavities, or medical conditions such as diabetes — we may recommend more frequent visits. Your dentist will advise you at the end of your examination.

Do you accept new patients?

Yes — we warmly welcome new patients at City Dental Clinic. You can book your first appointment online, or call us on 020 7638 0870 and our reception team will be happy to help.

Is a dental examination painful?

No. The examination itself is completely painless. We use a gentle, thorough approach, and our experienced team will always explain each step as we go. If you are nervous about visiting the dentist, please do let us know when you book — we have extensive experience with anxious patients and will do everything we can to make you feel at ease.

Will I need X-rays at my first appointment?

Digital X-rays are often recommended at a new patient examination, as they allow us to see the internal structure of your teeth and the supporting bone — things that cannot be detected during a visual examination alone. Our digital X-rays use significantly lower radiation than traditional film X-rays, and the results are instant. If required, we also utilise state of the art 3-D x-ray technology when needed (CBCT scans). (Additional fees apply)

Do you offer dental examinations for nervous patients?

Absolutely. We have extensive experience helping nervous and anxious patients feel comfortable in the chair. Our practice also offers sedation dentistry options for those who need extra support. Visit our nervous patients page or call us to discuss your needs before booking.
